All of my machines are available for you to use if you don’t have your own or if you don’t want to bring your machine to the class. Just let me know at the time of booking.

Weekly/Regular Group Lessons

Each week (during the school term) there are a number of regular adults classes running. They are on Thursday Morning (10am-1pm), Thursday Evening (7pm-10pm) and on some Friday Mornings (10am-1pm) and  Tuesday Afternoons (1pm-4pm). Tuesday afternoons are for dressmaking and limited to 4 people.

These classes have become wonderful Modern Sewing Bees. The classes decide if they would like to follow a GillyMac Project – for example making one of the quilts, bags or projects below – or if they would prefer to bring their own projects to work on.  In the past, the classes have worked on quilts, bags, tuffets, dresses, cushions, and wall hangings. Every class is accompanied by lots of tea, coffee, and homemade cakes. The cost of the class is £15 paid 1/2 termly in advance.

Currently, the status of spaces in these classes is

Thursday Morning – No spaces

Thursday Evening – Standby Space (at the beginning of each 1/2 term I will know which weeks I have spare slots, but there is no slot to come every week).

Friday Morning – Standby Space (at the beginning of each 1/2 term I will know which weeks I have spare slots, but there is no slot to come every week).

If you are interested in being made aware of the standby slots or dates for dressmaking, then drop me an email on mail@gillymacdesigns.com

All-In-One Box Pouch by Aneela Hoey, Evening Class

***New to GillyMac Designs*** Aneela’s Boxy POuch is a classic and she has recently updated the pattern and created it in a printed format, so I thought it should be introduced into the portfolio of Aneela’s Pouches we are building up.

When completed, the finished pouch has a fold-down front with two clear vinyl zippered pockets to show contents at a glance.on the back, it has a pocket which is super handy to keep scissors, pincushion etc. within reach as you sew and this is all surrounding the roomy box pouch. Great to use for sewing, knitting, kids toys, travel and more.

I’ve just made one for our traveling medicine kit!

The finished pouch is 10″ x 6″ x 5″

The cost of this class includes the clear vinyl, fusible fleece, and interfacing which I will have cut out and ready for you when you arrive.

Zip-Up Tray Pouch or Boxy Clear Pouch by Aneela Hoey, Evening Class

Chose from either of these two patterns by Aneela Hoey.

Boxy Clear/Glitter Pouch Bag set was designed by Aneela Hoey and the pattern was launch in September 2017.  You will need to bring along your fabric and zips, and included in the class price is one of Aneela’s patterns, along with glitter vinyl, stabiliser and interfacing to make both pouches. If you are new to sewing with vinyl this is an easy introduction to using this modern material to make sparkly lovely things!

Zip Up Tray Pouch – This another super popular pattern by designer by Aneela Hoey.  This pouch folds out flat creating a container which is 11″ x 4″ x 7″, (folding back up to 11″ x 4″ x 4″). It is a really cool different pouch. You will need to bring along your fabric and zips, and included in the class price is one of Aneela’s patterns, along with the interfacing needed to make 2 pouches (one we will make on the night and enough interfacing to make another one later). If you are new to sewing you will be amazed you can make this cool thing in just one evening so don’t be shy!

I really enjoyed making this quilt. It comes together quickly and each pattern comes with a bonus quilting plan suggestion for the quilt.

The quilt comes in lap/baby, single and twin sizes.

This quilt is not difficult and is beginner friendly.

Modern Curves – Day Class

More modern piecing and quilting has become a passion. I have enjoyed learning more and more about it over the past 4 years and this year will be

teaching 3 classes around this genre – Modern Curves, Liberated Quilting, Log Cabin Challenge.

In modern curves you will create a large (20″) cushion cover during the day, using a simple freehand curved rotary cutting and piecing technique. We will look at how smaller piecing can be added to create focus and interest in your work and will go and quilt it in the afternoon. This is a useful technique to learn and one that will unlock the opportunities of curved piecing to you for traditional quilts as well as modern and art quilting.

Wednesday 26th September – 10am-3.30pm £50

Liberated Quilts – Day Class

GillyMac’s Liberated Quilt

More modern piecing and quilting has become a passion. I have enjoyed learning more and more about it over the past 4 years and this year will be teaching 3 classes around this genre – Modern Curves, Liberated Quilting, Log Cabin Challenge

In this Liberated Quilts class, we will throw the rule book out of the window and thoroughly enjoy a day of sewing without rules, using colour value to create interest in the block we sew and ultimately join them into a small quilt. My liberated quilts have all been very colourful, but if all that colour isn’t your thing – consider choosing a group of plain colours to build your quilt with. If you are a traditionalist, then this will be an enjoyable challenge – if you like something more modern, you will love making this.

Tuesday 5th June – 10am-3.30pm – £50 (3 places left)

Tuesday 9th October- 10am- 3.30pm – £50

Night Sky Quilt by Jaybird Quilting

At long last, I have made this quilt and I love it. The quilt uses the Jaybird SideKick ruler which I have here waiting for you to use to build your own version of this quilt. The quilt can be constructed in Baby, Lap or Twin size (the King Size is huge). Cutting out is a breeze with the ruler, and I can honestly say that putting it together is not difficult if you follow a few simple rules and construct it using my tips! On the day we will make at least two blocks, and discuss how the final quilt is assembled. Drop in classes will be available for finishing off support if you need it. Rulers will be available to borrow after the class to complete the cutting out if needed.

You will use either the Sew Kind of Wonderful Quick Curve Rule or the Mini Quick Curve Ruler to create this smashing quilt. Cutting out is made very easy using the guide slot in the ruler to cut out the pieces. If you have never pieced curves – don’t be concerned, as this is easy and there is no need for excessive pinning, a few tips and you will have it nailed. I have no doubt you will love piecing this quilt – and for afterward, I will also give you my own quilting plans for you to use should you wish to.

Storm at Sea – Day Class,

During the Summer of 2016, I started to plan this quilt.  There are so many options to how it can look, depending on the colour choices made and then there was the decision as to whether to foundation piece this quilt or use rulers. After some time and lots of fun,  I chose to use rulers (which are superb and make cutting out the pieces very quick and easy). As for my colour choices, there were too many that I liked, so I am continuing to make this quilt in smaller forms in different and more gorgeous colour mixes.

In this class,  we will make at least one block, if not more, during the day and we will discuss how the project can be completed and quilted. If you need to borrow a ruler after the class to complete your cutting out, then this will be no problem. There are full notes for every stage of this quilt (including quilting) which you will be given on the day

Tuesday 25th September – 10am-3.30pm £50

Introduction to Ruler Quilting  – Day or Set of 2 Evening Classes

Ruler quilting on a domestic machine turns quilting on its head. Now you can divide up space to be quilted using sewn ruled lines without the need to turn bulky quilts through the throat of your machine.  In this class you make a quilters tote bag front and back whilst you learn;

  • how to set up your machine ready for ruler quilting and protect it from damage
  • how to hold the ruler and move the quilt and ruler together whilst sewing
  • practise 8 simple designs using rulers on key cards for you to take away
  • how to apply these designs to real patchwork spaces and borders that aren’t going to fit a complete number of repeats of patterns.
  • how to manage corners with the linear design tips on the best rulers to buy

The tote back pattern will be supplied to complete the bag after the class.

To facilitate this class, I have 4 domestic machines and one sit down long arm machine set up for ruler quilting, each with a complete set Angela Walters of rulers. Should you wish to use your own machine, I can help you ahead of time purchase a foot to use on the day.

It is very useful to also take the Quilt-As-You-Go Class to learn how to combine your beautifully ruler quilted small pieces into a much larger quilt.

Day Class – Tuesday 19th June – 10am-3.30pm £60 (full)

Evening Class – Mondays 2nd & 9th July – 7pm -10pm £60 (four places left)

Day Class – Wednesday 12th September 10am-3.30pm  £60

Continue with your journey with ruler quilting on this next class. This class will use both the Angela Walters rulers and a set of Hand Quilter rulers, tested for used with domestic machines. In this class you will create a small lap or baby quilt whilst;

  • building up your repertoire of designs with an additional 10 more complex designs, delivered on key cards for you to take away
  • applying these designs to difficult spaces and borders of any size
  • learning how to divide ‘blank space’ on a quilt and apply ruler designs and free motion quilting to this space
  • using the Angela Walters rulers and graduate to using long arm Handi Quilter rulers appropriate for a domestic machine as well.
  • practising easy fillers for within your ruler work

The quilt pattern will be supplied to complete after the class.

As with the ‘Introduction Class’,  I have 4 domestic machines and one sit down long arm machine set up for ruler quilting, each with a complete set Angela Walters of rulers. Should you wish to use your own machine, I can help you ahead of time purchase a foot to use on the day.

It is very useful to also take the Quilt-As-You-Go Class to learn how to combine your beautifully ruler quilted small pieces into a much larger quilt.

Quilt-As-You-Go, Day Class

Quilt-As-You-Go is an ideal way to quilt smaller pieces of a quilt and then join them AFTER the quilting is done. Many modern machines have a small ‘throat’ and so manipulating larger projects through this space can be troublesome. In this class, we will make up a number of fun wonky log cabin blocks by preparing them with the wadding and backing already incorporated. In this way,  once we have pieced them, they are already quilted and ready to join together. I will then demonstrate three different methods of joining the pieces together and after lunch, you will go on to practise all or some of the methods by joining your own blocks.  We will finish by looking at techniques for reducing bulk and adding borders and binding.

Wednesday 27th June 10am-3.30pm – £50 (3 places left)

Wednesday 3rd October 10am-3.30pm – £50

Tuesday 11th December – 10am-3.30pm – £50

Sewing with Stretch Fabrics – Make a Grainline Pattern Tee or a Sweatshirt – Two-Evening Class

Dressmaking often starts with woven fabric because knit or stretch fabric seems very daunting.  In fact, when you know the basics of working with stretch fabrics you are likely to find them easier to work this as there are no tricky fastenings to deal with. This class is an introduction to stretch fabrics using one of three patterns from GrainLine Studios. Decide which pattern you like and let’s get started!

Pattern includes sizes are from UK Size 4-18

Option 1 – The Linden Sweatshirt – “This gives a modern update to the classic sweatshirt. Featuring a relaxed fit, raglan sleeves, and a graceful slightly scooped neckline, this sweatshirt is perfect for fall layering. View A features long sleeves with cuffs and falls to the mid hip with a lower ribbing band while View B hits at the high hip and has short sleeves. You can also mix and match sleeve and body lengths to create multiple versions of this sweatshirt.”

Option 2 – The Penny Raglan – “This is an oversized tee perfect for summer fun. The breezy shape keeps the fabric from clinging so you can stay cool while looking great. We love ours paired with our Maritime Shorts or Moss Skirt – their slim silhouettes balance the volume of the Penny perfectly!”

Option 3 – Lark Tee – “With a modern, slim fit ideal for layering, the Lark Tee is your closet’s new best friend. It’s great on its own or under your favourite button up, sweater, or blazer. All four sleeves are interchangeable with each of the necklines resulting in 16 potential different tees in one pattern!”

Simple Pattern Grading, A Set of 2 Evening Classes

I regularly see patterns I like, but which are not in my size. If it is something I really want to make, then I grade the patterns I buy to adjust them to fit me. In this class, you will learn two simple techniques to grade up and down patterns. We will start by grading up and down a multi-size pattern. We will focus on a bodice and a trouser example to meet all the challenges you can expect when doing this on your own. Then we will go on to grade up and down a single size pattern -this time using bodice and skirt example patterns and using the cut and spread method so that even without theguides of the multi-size patterns you will be able to adjust the pattern size.

This is a huge topic, but after these two evenings, you will leave with a solid understanding of how to use the patterns you have to meet your new size requirements.

Max 4 pupils per set

September Set  – 11th & 18th September 7pm -10pm £60 (inc. Test Patterns and Swedish Tracing Paper) (2 places left)

Perfect Fit Skirt, – Series of Four Evening Classes

Buying commercial patterns can be a frustrating business. The pictures look great, but the fit can often let you down. In this class, we will make our own pattern to create the PERFECT fit skirt for you, starting only with a tape measure, ruler and squared paper. The results from this class over the past four years have been incredible. We start with learning how to properly measure yourself and go on to translate these numbers into a sloper skirt -which is a model of your body, in skirt form. After this, I will go on to show you how to adapt your sloper into anA-Line, front pleated, back pleated, bias cut and pencil skirts. After week 2 you can decide to either make more patterns or make some skirts.

If you choose to make skirts up, then you will still have full instructions on how to go on and complete the patterns at home.
